- Missouri's contemporary politics and political culture were established by early migration patterns and cemented during the Civil War. For most of its history, Missouri's political culture (i.e., its attitudes about laws, institutions, and political leaders) was a mix of individual and traditional cultures—values that originated in the early history of the territory and the state.
