National Council for the Social Studies

Definition

  • The National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) is the largest organization in the United States dedicated to social studies education. The organization's core purpose, as articulated in the NCSS strategic plan, is “to lead the community of social studies professionals in promoting a knowledgeable and engaged citizenry.” Since its modest beginnings as a department within the National Education Association (NEA) in 1921, NCSS has grown to be one of the largest education associations with a membership that spans the globe and affiliate organizations in every region of the United States.
