National Health Service

Definition

  • As part of the post-World War II political settlement between capital and labour in Britain, led by Minister of Health Aneurin Bevan, the Attlee Labour government extended the national insurance system to provide free medical treatment to all in 1948. The policy was fiercely rejected by the British Medical Association, which saw it as a form of government control of the profession and an intrusion on its autonomy.
