  • In 1989, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) began spearheading the National Institutes of Health (NIH) contribution to the Human Genome Project (HGP). The HGP was an international research effort to establish the chromosomal location of all human genes or, in other words, to map out the human genome.
