  • Civil War General Philip Sheridan became one of Ulysses S. Grant's top lieutenants by the end of the Civil War and personified perhaps more than any other general the remorseless determination necessary to achieve victory. Sheridan graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1853 and served on the frontier until the outbreak of the Civil War.
