  • The RAND Health Insurance Experiment (HIE) was one of the largest and most important social experiments in U.S. history. The HIE randomly assigned several thousand families in various geographic areas of the nation to insurance plans with various levels of copayments and then followed up for 5 years to evaluate the effects on healthcare expenditures and health status.
