South Asian Muslim youth in the United States

Definition

  • South Asian Muslim youth in the United States are a diverse population, consisting of young people from Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Sri Lankan communities. (Afghan Americans are not always included in this category because Afghanistan is between South and West Asia and so they slip between the cracks of South Asian and Middle Eastern categorizations, although they share much culturally with Pakistanis and North Indians.) Although there has not been much focus in scholarly research on South Asian Muslim youth, greater attention has been paid since the events of September 11, 2001, to Muslim youth of South Asian as well as Middle Eastern backgrounds in the United States, but with varying implications.
