Wygant v. Jackson Board of Education
Definition
- Wygant v. Jackson Board of Education, decided in 1986, stemmed from a collective bargaining agreement between the school board of Jackson, Michigan, and its teachers' union that provided racial preferences for minority teachers in the event that layoffs became necessary. White teachers who lost their jobs as a result of this provision filed suit, claiming that the policy impermissibly discriminated against them on the basis of race.
