Preferred term

actuarial risk assessment

Definition

  • Administered on offenders at various stages throughout the criminal justice system, risk assessments serve a range of purposes, such as granting early release or parole or determining an appropriate treatment or follow-up plan. The use of such instruments has become increasingly relevant in recent decades because of the increasing number of interventions aimed at violent or sexual offenders and the need to protect the public, particularly when community release is considered or mandated.
