- A rare and precious metal just 150 years ago, aluminum is now a nearly ubiquitous element in consumer goods, cars, power lines, airplanes, and computers. Although aluminum is the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust, the process of extracting it from ore consumes extensive amounts of soil, water, and energy.
