Concept information

Preferred term

becoming (critical theory)

Definition

  • The attention to becoming in contemporary political theory owes much to Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche's efforts to displace the traditional philosophical concept of being and replace it with a world in constant flux, in which all forms of identity are more or less temporary fixations within an ongoing process of change. Nietzsche's theories of the will to power, of eternal recurrence, and of humanity as a bridge toward an overhuman may all be understood in this light.
