Preferred term

carcinoma of unknown primary

Definition

  • MOST HUMAN CANCERS are diagnosed by histopathological review of tissue biopsy by a trained pathologist. In the majority of cases, the pathologist is able to deduce where the malignant cells came from by examining aspects of the cells' morphology, unique markers present within and on the surface of the cells, and by examining the surrounding normal tissue.
