Preferred term

competitive balance

Definition

  • Competitive balance is a concern for amateur and professional sports leagues because the empirical evidence suggests that fans, both avid and casual, appreciate more rather than fewer competitive events and seasons. This concept has been formalized in what is called the Uncertainty of Outcome Hypothesis (UOH), which posits that sports consumers have a preference for increased competition, that is, uncertainty in outcome, and are willing to pay a premium, either with time, money, or both, to witness more rather than fewer competitive events.
