  • Cultural competency is defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health as having the capacity to function effectively within the realm of cultural beliefs, behaviors, and needs presented by consumers and their communities. In a school health setting, cultural competency may be used to describe individual educators and health care professionals who possess this capacity.
