Concept information

Preferred term

day care

Definition

  • The term day care is commonly used to describe out-of-home care for young children, typically while one or both parents are at work. Although the terms day care and child care are often interchangeably used, many who work in the field prefer the term child care because day care reflects when care is provided, not care providers' responsibilities.
