Preferred term

displacement effect

Definition

  • Archimedes' principle (circa 240 BC) states that “an object immersed in a fluid experiences a buoyant force that is equal in magnitude to the force of gravity on the displaced fluid.” In other words, when a person enters a full bathtub, water is displaced onto the floor. This displacement effect does not apply only in physics, however. [Source: Encyclopedia of Children, Adolescents, and the Media; Displacement Effect]
