Concept information

Preferred term

divorce and parenting

Definition

  • Years of research on parent-child relationships and on the effects of divorce have created a knowledge base that can guide professionals deciding children's living arrangements when their parents no longer live together (Kelly & Lamb, 2000; Lamb, 2002). Although the rates of divorce have recently stopped increasing, about half of the children in the United States are still likely to experience the separation of their parents before they reach adulthood, and many of them will cease having meaningful contact with their fathers.
