Preferred term

egocentric networks

Definition

  • Egocentric networks are patterns of social relations emphasizing the personal nature of modern-day communities. Rather than treating community as spatially bounded units such as neighborhoods or villages, egocentric networks treat community as networks of social relations emanating from a focal individual: ties with family, friends, coworkers, and acquaintances.
