  • The term electronic clinical records encompasses a number of individual designations that have been used by the healthcare information technology industry. Among the terms used are computerized patient record (CPR), which pertained to hospitals patient records, and was used prominently from the 1960s through the 1980s; electronic medical record (EMR), which pertained to ambulatory care patient records and was used in the 1980s and 1990s; and electronic health record (EHR), the current designation that includes patient records from a variety of healthcare entities both within and outside a single healthcare system.
