energy crisis

Definition

  • The energy crisis began in October 1973, when Arab members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) imposed an oil embargo on the countries—including the United States—that supported Israel in the Yom Kippur War. By the end of 1973, the price of crude oil had almost quadrupled, to $11.65 per barrel. [Source: Encyclopedia of U.S. Political History; Energy Crisis]
