Definition
- Geoengineering is the idea that technology rather than restraint in consumption and production can reverse climate change. It has been defined by David Keith as “the intentional large-scale manipulation of the environment, particularly manipulation that is intended to reduce undesired anthropogenic climate change.” The Council on Foreign Relations defines it as “any of a variety of strategies, such as injecting light-reflecting particles into the stratosphere that might be used to modify the Earth's atmosphere-ocean system in an attempt to slow or reverse global warming.” It can also be defined as the modification of global climate by influencing the amount of heat absorbed and reradiated by the Earth without changing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
