  • Health care services are the activities performed by health care organizations that aim to generate “health” as an output. The precise definition of health, per se, is broad and somewhat vague, but a working, managerial definition can include the following, depending on the precise setting: Disease-free state: cure, prevention such as cancer screening, vaccines Symptom-free state: for example, pain management Reduction in disease severity: for example, palliation, chronic disease management The term “health care organization” used in the preceding definition is limited to Physician practices, including the nonphysician providers and nurses in their employ Hospitals Nursing homes Hospices Home health agencies Characteristics of Health Care Services Health care services display many of the characteristics of other types of services such as financial services, insurance, and consulting firms.
