  • The “state health officer or commissioner” is the elected or appointed head of the main health agency, reporting to the governor or legislature, with primary responsibility for leading the state's lead health agency (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1992; Ford, Duncan, & Ginter, 2003). The agencies that different state health officers oversee, and requirements for the job, can vary greatly from state to state.
