- Historical geography, a branch of human geography that seeks to understand geographies of the past and often how the past impinges on the present, encompasses a broad range of scholarly activity. Practitioners of historical geography, deriving their theoretical perspectives, subject matter, and methodological tools from both history and geography, have long worked at the boundary of these two academic disciplines.
