  • Since 1849, Huntsville has served as the headquarters of the Texas state prison system, which is currently the largest in the United States. An imposing red-brick fortress known as “the Walls,” Huntsville gained national prominence not only for hosting the spectacular Texas Prison Rodeo but for its grim history of conflict, including perennial scandals, endemic abuse, and prisoner uprisings.
