Concept information

Preferred term

informal care

Definition

  • Unpaid care provided usually in the home and usually by woman to the sick and elderly. The deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill and the development of the hospital at home have contributed markedly to the demands placed on the informal sector and consequently women, to provide care at no cost to the state.
