Preferred term

legal aid

Definition

  • Free legal services, from assessment of financial need to counseling and representation, provided to persons who have limited or no financial means to pay a lawyer (those who are indigent). U.S. law has required provision of legal services to indigents since 1964, so as to ensure that the constitutional right to counsel does not unfairly discriminate against those who cannot pay for legal services.
