- The Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany, founded in 1998, started work in 1999 with a department on Integration and Conflict and a department on Property, now renamed Socialist and Postsocialist Eurasia. In 2000, the Project Group Legal Pluralism was established, and in 2002 a Siberian Studies Centre.
