Preferred term

norm of reciprocity

Definition

  • Alvin Gouldner postulated that the norm of reciprocity (i.e., the implicit or explicit expectation that individuals will behave prosocially and refrain from behaving antisocially toward others who have behaved prosocially toward them) is universal across human societies. Gouldner reasoned that the norm of reciprocity is buttressed by societal moral codes and, in turn, helps buttress societal structures.
