peacemaking/sentencing circles

Definition

  • A sentencing circle—sometimes called a peacemaking circle—is a community-directed sentencing/peacemaking process (as opposed to a conventional state-directed criminal justice proceeding), which aims to address offending behavior and establish community safety through drawing on the wisdom, experience, and capacity of the community. Although distinct to state-based justice, this community-based process works in partnership with juvenile and criminal justice professionals and systems.
