  • Rape trauma syndrome (RTS), originally theorized as an acute stress reaction to the threat of being killed while living through and surviving completed or attempted rape, has evolved into three overlapping but distinct bodies of literature regarding psychological trauma. This entry provides a definition of the syndrome as originally theorized and its value and limitations, key advances in knowledge regarding the human trauma response as related to epidemic yet minimized prevalence rates of sexual victimization and resultant traumatization, a brief comment on use of RTS in the prosecution of rape and sexual assault, and some suggestions on prevention.
