Concept information

Preferred term

reapportionment

Definition

  • In a representative democracy like the United States, one fundamental constitutional question is how public officials are to be selected for office. When population changes in electoral districts call into question the basis for this selection, legislative representation should be similarly redistributed by a process called reapportionment.
