Preferred term

single parents and careers

Definition

  • By the mid-1990s, 1 of every 4 families in the United States with children under 18 was a single-parent family, up from 1 of 10 in 1970. Oddly enough, no plausible explanation for this increase has been found, either within distinct subgroups or in an overall sense.
