  • In 1992, the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) defined social studies as an integrated study of social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence of citizens of a culturally diverse and democratic society in an interdependent world. More broadly defined, it is the preparation of students in the knowledge, skills, and values that will lead to active participation in their society.
