sustainable competitive advantage

Definition

  • A sustainable competitive advantage exists when a firm is able to protect a value-creating strategy from imitation by other firms—perhaps because it is too costly to imitate or too intricate. For example, the competitive advantage that Southwest Airlines had for so long seemed to be embedded in the unique corporate culture of the firm that allowed for the lowest costs in the industry.
