Preferred term

tomb of the unknowns

Definition

  • Until the recent past, in every war there have been fallen soldiers' bodies whose remains could not be identified. Surely these soldiers were buried by their respective states, but the idea of erecting a monument to these unknown war dead has a relatively recent history.
