Concept information

Preferred term

working class

Definition

  • Classically the working class is defined as that class which sells its labour power; it is Karl Marx's proletariat. But as such a definition includes almost all of the middle class of modern societies, it is generally refined by narrowing it to those who sell their physical labour power: that is, manual or blue-collar workers.
