Preferred term

maternal employment: effects on children

Definition

  • The effects of maternal employment and the effects of divorce on children have commonly been viewed as harmful to children, but a large body of research demonstrates that, in fact, maternal employment has largely beneficial effects on children, and divorce is not consistently associated with adverse consequences for children, especially if the effects of more impactful, associated variables, such as family income, family status, and mother's education and ability, are removed. Many potential impacts of divorce and maternal employment on children have been examined. [Source: Cultural Sociology of Divorce: An Encyclopedia; Maternal Employment: Effects on Children]
