Concept information

Preferred term

middle class

Definition

  • Often used in the plural to reflect its internal diversity, this term identifies non-manual workers: ‘middle’ in the sense of enjoying a wide variety of advantages over most manual workers but clearly subordinate to those whose wealth means they need not work. Although wealth and status usually go hand-in-hand, the initial division between middle and working class is not economic; it is social and cultural.
