- Although it is known that Morris dancing existed in England in late medieval times, with mentions of it in the 15th century—possibly as early as 1448, but certainly by 1483—the exact origin ofthe world “Morris” is debated by historians, and many concur that the name might have originally been “Moorish Dance”—as the Moors occupied parts of southern Spain until 1492. It has been claimed that the pageant known as the Mor-esca was devised to celebrate the capture of Granada in 1492 by the armies of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, and this pageant is still performed at Ainsa-Aragon, in the northeast of Spain.
