proto-globalization

Definition

  • Proto-globalization is a generic term that refers to a “first period of globalization.” As such, it is subject to the debate on what globalization entails and on when its historic origins can be found. Although many scholars have mentioned the existence of earlier forms of globalization, the actual project of a taxonomy of sequences of globalization is of a recent date, and it can be mostly attributed to the historians A. G. Hopkins and C. A. Bayle. [Source: Encyclopedia of Global Studies; Proto-Globalization]
