Concept information

Preferred term

religion, spirituality, and relationships

Definition

  • Social scientists have conducted many studies on the individual's perceived relationship with the sacred (i.e., God, the divine or transcendent reality), especially during times of stress. Findings indicate that positive perceptions of the sacred promote physical and psychological well-being, whereas spiritual struggles carry potentially high psychic and health costs if left unresolved.
