Concept information

Preferred term

school safety

Definition

  • Although many opinions surround schooling's purposes, the public shares a fundamental assumption that U.S. students and teachers work in safe schools. Despite persisting government reports stating students experience more crimes en route to and from school and also that teaching remains a safer public service career than similar occupations, sensational acts of school violence in the 1990s increased public concern over school safety.
