- Indian spiritual leader In the early 1970s, increasing numbers of Western spiritual seekers, dissatisfied with their culture, keen to explore the nature of consciousness, and inspired by accounts of “the wisdom of the East,” turned to non-Western sources of spiritual enlightenment.
