policy cycle

Definition

  • Policy cycle refers to the process whereby political actors attempt to shape the definition of problems, the setting of a policy agenda, the formulation of policy alternatives, the adoption and implementation of policy decisions, and the evaluation of policy outcomes. This perspective is underpinned by a linear, problem-oriented, rationalist, and systemic view of the policy process. [Source: International Encyclopedia of Political Science; Policy Cycle]
