- Shinto is a traditional Japanese folk religion, which has been deeply ingrained to people's lives throughout the long history of Japan since Japan's prehistoric period. Shinto has emphasized that a harmonious marital tie is a precious gift given by kami (the gods) and essential for passing on the legacy of earlier generations.
