Definition
- In the summer of 1794, the four western counties of Pennsylvania—Allegheny, Fayette, Washington, and Westmoreland—were the sites of a sudden outburst of popular violence in response to a federal excise tax on whiskey. Bands of armed men attacked federal tax collectors and talked about the possibility of independence. [Source: Encyclopedia of U.S. Political History; Whiskey Rebellion]
