Definition
- Advanced university degrees awarded after a number of years of study and completion of original research in a chosen field. The first African American to receive a doctoral degree from an American university was Edward Alexander Bouchet of New Haven, Connecticut, who graduated from Yale in 1876 with a Ph.D. in physics.
