governability

Definition

  • Governability is a concept borrowed from the hard sciences by the social sciences to refer to “governableness,” which can be defined as the quality of being governable, that is, capable of being controlled or managed. Arising during the economic crisis of the mid-1970s in North America, Western Europe, and Japan, the question of modern industrial societies' governability has gradually given rise to further thought on the working-out of new policy-making devices in a globalized space.
