Definition
- Lynching, the extralegal execution of suspects by a “mob” of three or more persons acting with some measure of local community approval, was a relatively frequent form of informal social control in the United States from 1880 to 1930 and occasionally occurred through the 1960s. They have been very rare events during the past four decades. [Source: Encyclopedia of Social Deviance; Lynching]
